2020 NZSEE Non-Structural Seismic Performance Series – Registration Open

Registration is now open for the first of two non-structural seismic performance webinars being brought to you by NZSEE and EQC

NZSEE Non-Structural Webinars | 1
New Zealand’s State of Practice – Consultant and Contractor Perspectives

NZSEE is pleased to invite you to the first of two webinars on non-structural seismic performance co-chaired by Helen Ferner (NZSEE President) and Rajesh Dhakal (University of Canterbury). We would like to acknowledge and thank our series partner EQC, who is providing support for these events.

Thursday 29 October 2020, 12-1.30pm

This is the first of two webinars on non-structural seismic performance and will include consultant and contractor perspectives on the challenges posed to the construction and property industry and the importance of getting it right. It will explore some of the technical and organisational factors which influence project delivery and performance outcomes—and investigate opportunities and new approaches.

Registering will provide you with login details for the webinar.  Numbers are limited so please only register if you plan to attend. Anyone may attend; however preference will be given to NZSEE members if places are oversubscribed.

Design, Construction and Seismic Performance of Non-Structural Elements

Jan Stanway
Principal Structural Engineer, WSP

Jan will present the findings from the Quake Centre White Paper regarding the Design, Construction and Seismic Performance of non-structural elements in New Zealand.  The research found that the poor seismic performance and damage to non-structural elements in recent New Zealand earthquakes was principally due to poor coordination, inadequate or lack of seismic restraints and insufficient clearances to cater for seismic actions. It also found a significant contribution from secondary issues including design responsibility, procurement and risk allocation.  The presentation will review the challenges facing the industry and discuss the suggested steps that, if adopted, are expected to significantly improve the seismic performance of buildings in New Zealand.

A Contractor Perspective of “Non-Structural Seismic”

James Kendall
Pre-Construction Design Manager, Hawkins Construction

James brings over 20 years of experience in project and design management. His presentation will look at lessons learned across recent projects and suggestions for best-for-project outcomes.

Seismic Restraint Design – Thinking Holistically

Andrew Baird
Senior Structural Engineer, Beca

Undertaking seismic restraint design during construction is like retrofitting a new design into an existing building – the ability to coordinate with other disciplines and come up with holistic solutions is lost. Earlier design allows for coordination between disciplines, improves construction efficiency and ensures a compliant design is costed and completed. However, it is not without its challenges. This presentation shares some lessons learnt on recent projects where this new approach has been implemented. It will include when certain aspects of a design should be undertaken, what items need to be discussed with building services engineers, how to find a suitable balance between accuracy and flexibility in design.

The presentations will be followed by time for questions and discussion with speakers and this session’s co-chairs Helen Ferner (NZSEE President) and Tim Sullivan (University of Canterbury). We look forward to seeing you there.
