Venezuela 2026

Kia ora koutou,

The NZSEE Learning from Earthquakes team expresses its sympathy to the people, communities and friends of Venezuela affected by this earthquake sequence.

NZSEE’s Learning from Earthquakes (LfE) group has prepared its first-ever Virtual Earthquake Reconnaissance Team (VERT) report, examining the earthquake doublet that struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026, affecting Caracas, Barquisimeto, Valencia, Maracay, and Maracaibo – home to over 80% of the country’s population.

The group prepared a report within one week using open-source information (social media, satellite imagery, and geolocation of damage). This preliminary report is a first look at a still-unfolding disaster, with the team expecting to refine findings as more data becomes available.

As this is NZSEE’s first VERT mission, we’d love your feedback on how useful this format is, so we can improve future reconnaissance efforts.

We would also like to acknowledge the voluntary contributions of Aaron Rampersad, Alex Shegay, Ben Exton, Catalina Miranda, Gonzalo Lozano, Julian Benito, Mark Stringer, Meini Zhao, Nikolas Schmauk, Rebecca Sanders, and Samantha Kreig.

As this is an evolving event, we anticipate further updates and welcome continued engagement and contributions from the wider NZSEE membership to support ongoing learning.
