Citation on the award of NZSEE Fellow, April 2024
Craig Stevenson is conferred Fellowship of NZSEE for his services to Earthquake Engineering and Structural Engineering in New Zealand.
Craig Stevenson is a highly experienced and well-respected earthquake engineering practitioner, holding senior technical leadership roles within Aurecon and its predecessor organisations for several decades. He has made a significant contribution to seismic design and assessment practice in New Zealand over the past four decades and continues to do so through his involvement in numerous committees and working groups. He has been extensively involved across the health and education sectors, and is a Fellow of Engineering New Zealand.
Craig has served on a range of national technical committees, making key contributions to the NZS4203:1992 Loadings Standard Committee, and as a member of the NZSEE Study Group on Earthquake Risk Buildings that produced the 2006 Assessment and Improvement of the Structural Performance of Buildings in Earthquakes (2002-2006).
Craig provided technical assistance to the joint MBIE/NZSEE project reviewing recommendations for the update of the Seismic Assessment Guidelines (2015/16), and was a Task Group Member for the joint MBIE/NZSEE project, drafting of the Technical Proposal to Revise the Engineering Assessment Guidelines C5, known as the “Yellow C5” document (2017/18), and the group currently reviewing and proposing updates to these guidelines.
Craig was also a member of the Engineering New Zealand Precast Floors Monitoring Group (2019 – 2021), is a current member of the Te Whatu Ora Health Engineering Advisory Group (2023 – current), and currently serves as a member and Chair of the Heavy Engineering Research Association (HERA) Board. He has also served New Zealand as a senior Urban Search and Rescue engineer from 2004 to 2013. He was involved in rescues following the Christchurch earthquakes, and spent more than a month there in support of various response and early recovery activities.
Craig has been a member of the Society for many years and has served for six years on the Management Committee, from 1999 through to 2005. During this time on the Management Committee, he contributed widely to the operation and advancement of the Society.
The breadth of Craig’s contribution across earthquake engineering, and to the activities of the Society, represents exceptional service to the profession and makes Craig a very worthy recipient of Fellowship of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering.
