2001 Recipient: David Middleton

David Middleton has made a tremendous contribution to the work of the Society since he took up the position of General Manager of the EQC in 1993. In this role, he has what could be termed a statutory interest in the Society - but the active role he has taken in a number of areas extends well beyond this. As well as being an integral part of our Management Committee meetings, he attends a host of other related committees that perhaps one might not expect a General Manager to. He has been an incredibly strong supporter of our work during a time in which the Commission scaled its insurance activities down to focus on residential construction.

He has played a key role in ensuring that the interests of EQC's Research Foundation continue to cover the full range of the built environment, and both mitigation and response preparedness activities.

Arguably his greatest contribution has been his successful stewardship of a significantly expanded national Geohazards Monitoring Network. As announced last month, this $50million project will have far reaching benefit for all areas of the Society's interests and work. Achieving this required tremendous persuasion and persistence on David's part, and demonstrated a remarkable political courage borne of absolute belief in the technical merits of the proposal.
