The Earthquake Commission is generously providing a number of travel grants-in-aid for NZ based earthquake engineering students and practitioners to attend the 16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE) in Chile in January 2017. The WCEE, which is held once every four years since 1956, represents one of the largest international gatherings of experts and future leaders active in earthquake engineering.  WCEE is an important forum for the exchange of findings and experiences in mitigating the effects of earthquakes and earthquake related hazards.

The New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering is pleased to be assisting the EQC in the award selection and the administering of the travel grants. The award selection will be based on merits, needs and potential for future impact. A number of awards each up to $5,000 will be available.

There is no standard application form. Please submit the following with the subject heading [16WCEE-grant-in-aid] to exec@nzsee.org.nz before 23 September 2016

  • A cover letter outlining the purpose of the attendance, benefits expected for you and the NZ earthquake engineering sector, and justification for the extent of funding support requested
  • A brief CV (no more than 2 pages)
  • A brief letter of support from research supervisor or employer
  • A copy of your accepted paper if applicable

It is EQC and NZSEE’s intention to support as many applicants in need as possible so please consider this when making your applications. Results will be made available on the 30 September 2016 by email. Successful applicants are expected to submit a conference report to the EQC outlining the benefits arising from the conference, within 60 days of return.
