This is the seventh conference gathering Earthquake Engineers from countries on the "Pacific Rim of Fire" together to review and discuss current research and practice. This conference, organised by the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering, was held at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand from 13-15 February 2003.

Papers prepared for presentation at the conference are published as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) documents on this CD. Each paper is published in two forms, one optimised for on-screen viewing and the other for printing. The screen-optimised versions are accessed through links marked [Read] and the others through links marked [Print]. Of course, either version may be both viewed and printed.

These proceedings were prepared from manuscripts submitted by the authors as Microsoft Word documents before the conference. Manuscripts were peer-reviewed and most were revised by the authors before conversion to PDF format for publication. Abstracts on these pages were generated from a separate conference database, and may& have minor differences to those in the papers.

Copies of the proceedings CD are be available from the Society's web site (go to NZSEE Home Page) at a cost of NZ$150.

The conference organising committee would like to thank the authors, session chairs, manuscript reviewers and editorial assistants who contributed to the publication of these proceedings. They also acknowledge the significant contribution to the conference in the form of the sponsorship provided by the NZ Earthquake Commission and other corporate sponsors listed below.

Views and opinions expressed in the conference papers represent those of the authors and may not represent the opinions of the publisher, the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering Inc., the University of Canterbury or the conference sponsors.
