Overview

This workshop will draw together lessons from recent earthquakes and tsunamis to develop a road map for improved regional resilience. An overview will be presented on recent earthquakes in the region and beyond. National representative and other delegates, from Southwest Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand, in the areas of engineering, building control and disaster management, will be invited to contribute to the workshop. The aim is to build regional awareness and consensus on what are the perceived priorities for improving earthquake resilience in the region over the next 5 years.

This will include considerations of:

Co-operative disaster management strategies
Seismological studies
Tsunami mitigation systems
Earthquake engineering guidelines
Joint codes and standards
Education
Continuing professional development
Building control systems development.

With recent events there has never been a better time to get a clear direction for the region.
The first day of workshop sessions on Monday 22rd August. It will focus on presentations from representative delegates on the level of resilience of their nation, and reflections on what has been learned from their experiences with recent earthquakes and tsunamis. The day will end with the development of a draft matrix of regional earthquake resilience and the opportunity to reflect on the day’s discussions over a formal dinner that evening.

On Wednesday 24th August the delegates will form three specialist working groups focussing on the development of initiatives in the areas of earthquake engineering, building control and disaster management. These initiatives will be reported back to the full workshop for consideration and interim prioritisation.

The draft workshop programme (updated 18 Aug) provides a timetable of the presentations and working group activities.

The workshop will end with the drafting of a joint statement for vote and signing by the official national representatives endorsing the deliberations of the workshop.
