Annual Conference 2001

The Society held its 2001 Technical Conference and Annual Meeting at Wairakei Resort, Taupo 23 to 25 March. The theme of the conference was: Future Directions: A Vision for Earthquake Engineering in New Zealand

 

Of special note at this year's conference were the following awards:

David Middleton received the President's Award

Peter Moss was awarded Life Membership

The Conference Proceedings have been produced electronically on CD, in addition to traditional hard copy volumes. Both are available from the Secretary.

 

This year's conference included:

  • There were a record number of accepted papers (35) from a wide range of disciplines covering physical sciences, social sciences and the built environment
  • Papers by the current Presidents of the NZ Institute of Architects (Ron Pynenburg) and the Geological Society of New Zealand (Dr Simon Nathan)
  • A perspective on the future directions in performance based design by Professor John Mander of the University of Canterbury, recently returned after more than a decade in the US
  • A session dedicated to the presentation of Poster Papers
  • An update on the latest developments with the proposed changes to the earthquake prone provisions of the Building Act
  • Open discussion on the Society's Strategic and Financial Plan
