Travelling Lectureship - Rescue Engineering: The Reality

New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering in association with local IPENZ Branches and Structural Groupsis pleased to present a Travelling Lectureship by David Hammond

David Hammond graduated as a Structural Engineer from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1954, and has been in private practice, engaged in the design of seismically resistant structures, since 1957. He is a Life Member of the Structural Engineers Assoc of Northern California, where he served as Chairperson of the Disaster Emergency Services Committee. He received an Outstanding Public Service Award, 1991, for leadership while assisting FEMA in establishing the US&R Response System.

 

David has been closely involved in Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) as the Leader of US Search Dog Team 3 following the Mexico City 1985 Quake, and was the Lead Structure Specialist for the FEMA, US&R response to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing Incident, the 1996 Puerto Rico Gas Explosion and the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. He is the current Chairperson of the FEMA, US&R Technical Working Group, and is the lead instructor for Structure Specialists Training as well as other FEMA US&R training courses.

 

David is being brought here by the NZ Urban Search and Rescue Steering Committee to assist with the delivery of the first USAR Structures Specialist course (Level 2) to be delivered in this country, and to accompany his wife Shirley, who is assessing the first NZ Advanced USAR search dog evaluation.

His presentation will cover the latest US thinking on rescue engineering, including the assessment of structures that have been the subject of attack by explosive devices. These presentations will be given in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland as follows:
